As succinctly summarized by IMDB: “A delusional young guy strikes up an unconventional relationship with a doll he finds on the Internet.” While that seems like a recipe for a kinky, weird ass movie, I have to say it’s more about relationships with people and overcoming our issues.
We are all a little bit like Lars; we project our stuff on to our partners or those around us. It’s not so obvious because our partners probably aren’t literal dolls. Nevertheless, when things get tough, we can think they’re the ones being unreasonable, having the breakdown, being needy and on and on.
We’re all a little bit crazy like that. And like Lars, sometimes we snap out of it; we catch a glimpse of a wider perspective. We grow up. We learn. We become better people. Maybe we remember what we already knew and thought we’d never forget. We add some perfection to our already existing perfection and some wholeness to our already there wholeness.
We probably won’t have a full on delusion like his overtake us; we’ll need to be a little more intentional than Lars in our journeys. We need to be patient with ourselves while our issues play out. We need to get curious and find the “right” questions to ask to reveal what is right there waiting for us.
